Things To Do In Kota Kinabalu, Sabah (Part 2 : Sapi Island)

In my previous post, I'd mention about Jesselton Point, which is the main public ferry terminal for Labuan and boat terminal for Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park which consist of  Gaya Island, Sapi Island, Manukan Island, Mamutik Island and Sulug Island.

Since it's the holiday season, I'm going to post about an island getaway (sorta), lol. A friend and I decided to visit Sapi Island instead of island hopping to 3 different islands since we find it a little tedious and we prefer a more relaxing trip.

Here's an aerial picture view I took from a plane window (from a trip to Labuan Island) which shows the small cluster of islands.

According to the WikipediaPulau Sapi, literally known as "Cow Island" in Malay is just off the south-western tip of Pulau Gaya. The 25-acre (10 ha) island features one of the nicest beaches in the park and most popular with tourists for snorkelling and scuba diving. Between 10am and 4pm the island gets quite busy with foreign tourists but after the last ferry leaves it becomes a tranquil island with only those staying overnight. It is developed with tourist facilities that includes a jetty, picnic shelters, barbecue pits, tables, changing rooms and toilets. The forest is inhabited by macaques. Camping and campfires are allowed with the permission from the Park Warden.

At Jesselton Point, you'll find different boat operators which offers more or less the same package, but the price may differ so it's good to check with a few different boat operators before making up your mind. After we decided on going to Sapi Island, we choose the friendliest boat operator and bought our tickets which is also inclusive of life jacket for the boat trip. If you're planning to do some snorkeling, there's also snorkeling gears and life jackets for hire.

Before going for our island trip, we decided to bring some fast food takeway for our little island picnic. The boat ride only took around 10 minutes, we truly enjoy the boat ride and since the weather is quite sunny, the sea view was spectaculary blue : )

Stepping out from the boat, we were quite taken with the white sandy beaches and sparkling blue sea water, it truly feels like paradise, lolz.

We quickly thank the boat operator and told him we'll be heading back around 3pm in the evening. One important thing to do before stepping out of the boat is to remember which boat operator you'd hired and don't forget to ask for his name or tel no, or else you'll have a hard time to remember which boat you'd have to ride back home since it's going to be quite crowded in the evening.

Luckily it was not so crowded that day since we planned our outing on a weekday, if you're going to do some island getaway on weekend, be prepared for huge crowds as families or companies usually do their picnics or family day on weekends.

Sapi Island is definitely the perfect choice is you're into swimming and snorkelling. There's plenty of fishes and coral beds and I was really excited to spot Nemo swimming around. Too bad I didn't get to take any pictures of that since I was too busy being amazed, but I did get to take a picture of this, meh...

and this.......
I'd visit all 3 islands of Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park and I noticed Sapi Island has the most seashells. So if you're planning to collect seashells , this is the place for you.

Crystal clear sea water, super sunny weather, ahhh paradise....

I'm glad I pick a blue dress that day, lolz.

After splashing ourselves silly in the water for a while, we head back to our secluded spot at the end of the beach and dig into our little takeaway lunch. Lunch buffet here cost quite a bomb and we really don't wanna spend that much on seafood buffet that we can easily get in KK for less.

There's a few monitor lizard hanging around the island. Not to be confused with the poisonous komodo dragons, monitor lizard is a little smaller in size and apparently they also have an appetite for KFC finger licking good fried chicken.

Can I have more of that KFC fried chicken please? lolz.

Time flies when you're having fun. Soon it was time to head back home. It didn't take long before our boat operator arrives.

Overall, Sapi Island is the perfect island for someone who prefers a more tranquil environment, there's less crowds and you can spend quiet moments reading your favourite novel while enjoying the beautiful sea view. Also do check out the weather forecast before planning any island getaway since it's best to do it during clear sunny weather : )
